Hometown Cha Cha Cha

Hometown Cha Cha Cha is one of the earliest K-drama I have watched and it still ramains my favourite. It's a light romantic story of a Seoul based dentist and Gongjin (seaside small town) handyman who is keen on helping his neighbours.

Yoon Hye-jin is a successful dentist in Seoul and loves buying expensive branded stuff like shoes, bags. She is a perfectionist. She refuses to bow to pressure from her seniors of recommending expensive treatment and earning more money. She chooses to resign from her job instead and decided to take a trip to seaside town Gongjin where she had happy memories with her late mother.

Hong Du-sik or simply Captain Hong is a jack of all trades in Gongjin and is always keen on helping his neighbours. He is courier man, he is an electrician, he is plumber, so on ans so forth. He has obtained all sorts of licenses.

At crossroads, Hye-jin met Captain Hong and decided to open a dental clinic in Gongjin on the spur of the moment. She managed to offend Gongjin residents and made herself detestable. Nobody wants to visit her clinic. Under such pressing circumstances her friend Pyo-jin decided to join her and offers her some relief. Hye-jin is not a bad person by nature. She has her own share of kindness also.

Captain Hong helps her in acclimatising to village life and helps Hey-jin in every way. They didn't realise how and when they got closer. Though Captain Hong appears idle and seems like very average person initially, he is a well educated person from Seoul National University. He has past, of which nobody in the town is aware of. Hey-jin opens upto him but he is still reserved and is not able to open up to her easily. One fine day his past suddenly comes to life and he becomes talk of the town. This was not the way he wanted to share his past with others. But few things are not within his powers. This being romantic and light drama the end had to be "...and they lived happily ever after." Oh hold on!! That's not all. There is a love triangle when Ji Seong-hyun, former classmate of Hye-jin and a star variety show producer comes to Gongjin.

Apart from this main story line, there are many Gongjin inmates appear in the drama and each has his own story to tell. Many such parallel stories run in the background. There are three grandmothers with Kim Gam-ri being leader of the gang. Then there is Hwa-jung who is land lady of Hye-jin's clinic and house and is a divorced lady. Young-guk is the youngest chief of the village and Hwa-jung's ex-husband. The reason of their divorce is not known to anyone. Cheon-je is a cafe owner in Gongjin and was a famous singer who disapppeared after giving hit song in 1990s. The list of cast is quite long but the drama doesn't appear to be crowded. Its a very pleasant experience. Not too loud, not too cheesy. You can sit comfortably with your family and watch the drama without any apprehension.
