The Story of Pearl Girl


The Story of Pearl Girl is a period C-drama which narrates a story of pearl diver Duan Wu (alias Su Muzhe). The drama starts with a pitiful life of pearl divers on Cui Pearl farm. Duan Wu is one such oppressed pearl diver who accepts the challenge of retrieving big pearl from the dangerous sea which is frequented by sharks to gain freedom.  Under sea she is assaulted by her fellow pearl divers and realizes that the greed of men is more dangerous than the flesh eating sharks. Every year Cui Pearl farm sends pearl tribute to the emporer. Rich merchant Yan Zijing and a scholar Zhang Jinran visit Cui Pearl farm. Yan Zijing buys all the pearls and then sets the Cui Pearl farm on fire and leaves the place. Duan Wu manages to escape the farm with her sworn brother Shrimp.

Just before her escape, she gets to know that Lady Eight was her biological mother. Lady Eight gives her a blood stained pearl and dies. This is the turning point in Duan Wu's life. She escapes on Yan Zijing's ship and starts working there as cleaning assistant. She is burning with a desire to gain freedom and become a peddler, sell goods and settle down with Shrimp. Every opportunity offers her a step towards her desires but also presents enormous risks. 

During the journey Duan Wu learns everyting about the jewellery business, creates new friends along the way, finds true love, survives the desert, faces betrayal, uncovers her mysterious past, loses her near & dear ones, fights black dragon bandits and finally manages to create a place for herself in the male dominated society. 

This is an inspiring story of a woman who has a burning ambition to achieve something, willingness to learn new things and acquire skills, willpower to overcome all hurdles, and readiness to take the risks. Main story has many other supporting stories like vengeance of Yan Zijing, pursuit of justice by Zang Jinran, secret of blood stained pearl, uncovering the true identity of black dragon bandits.

The presentation is good. The characters are well developed. Suspense is maintained till the end and the ending is not traditional. Recommend for binge watching.
