Genie, Make a Wish

There is a emotionless girl Ka-young. There is a lamp and yes, there is a Genie! The result is highly entertaining Romantic Comedy. 

Ka-young was abandoned by her family and was left with her grandmother. Her mother used to send money annually for expenses. She was brought up by her grandmother and her friends. Ka-young could not feel any emotions. She had only one friend Choi Mi-ji. Ka-young was a very clever girl. She had graduated from prestigious Seoul National University and has opened a garage. She also earned a lot by investing in stock market. Ka-young is a girl of routine. She goes for scuba diving on particular days of the month, she goes for hiking on designated days, she visits a particular restaurant and eats gamja tang every week. She keeps her word no matter what. 

During her trip to Dubai, she finds a magical lamp and becomes a master of a genie who is residing in a magical lamp. Iblis, the genie has been imprisoned in the lamp by the almighty for more than 1000 years for his arrogant deeds. When the God created human beings, Iblis refused to bow before human beings as he considered them as lowly creatures. To make his point, he took it upon himself to corrupt men by granting them 3 wishes. So when Ka-young finds the lamp, he wants her to state her wishes. But she refuses initially. She believes in good nature of humankind. Finally she agrees and makes her first wish that Iblis should fulfil wishes of 5 people who cross them on the street. If any of them make wish for the other then he would bow in front of Ka-young. 

There is another important character Ejjlael who keeps on appearing in the story at every juncture. He is the angel of death. He had fought against Iblis during the war between angels and genies. He has vowed to cut Iblis' head if he bows before a human.  There is also a villain Khalid. 

The love starts blooming between Ka-young and Iblis. Ka-young and Iblis share a connection since her previous births. But Iblis has forgotten 20 years of his life. The story gets more and more entertaining when Iblis starts fulfilling wishes of 5 people which also includes 1 dog. During this period, they also start discovering their forgotten past. As they spend more and more time, jigsaw puzzle starts fitting into place. Who was Ka-young in her previous births, how was she connected with Iblis, why the war was fought between angels and genies, what wishes are made by Ka-young, whether Ka-young and Iblis have  happy ending?

This drama has stirred many controversies due to mis-representation of Islamic beliefs. It was also accused of cultural insensitivity.  But if you look at it feom fresh perspective then the drama offers good entertainment and light comedy.  The characters are well developed and they shared good chemistry. No harm is seeing it once!
